They call themselves vepslaine, bepslaane, lüdinik, lüdilaine (pl. vepslaized, bepslaazed, lüdinikad, lüdilaized). The name is thought to be coming from the Russain word ljudi - people. The Russians call Vepsians Chud. The name is thought to be from the Saami language, where the word c'udde means foreign and hostile people. In colloquial Russian, Vepses are usually called Chukhar or Chukhna (usually disdainfully).
