Saamis

The name for themselves saam´ and saamm´lja (on the Kola peninsula), sabme, sabmelaš.
Other people have called them fenns (finns) and starting from 12th century lapps (the form lop' is used in old Russian chronicles starting from 1000). The Saami name has been propageted in Russia starting from 1920's, in Scandinavian countries for the last decades. Saamis themselsves consider the name lapp as an insult.
